How to find old WhatsApp messages, quotes and attachments fast

"What price did we agree last spring?" Finding one message in months of chats is painful. WhatsApp has more search tools than most people use, and a few habits make it much easier.
Search everything, then filter
- Tap the search bar at the top of your chats list and type a word you remember, such as "quote", a price or a street name.
- Use the filters under the search bar (Photos, Videos, Links, Documents and more) to narrow it down.
- Tap a result to jump straight to that point in the conversation.
Search inside one chat
Open the chat, tap the contact or group name, then tap Search. Only that conversation is searched, which is much faster for busy group chats.
Browse media, links and documents
In the contact or group info screen, open Media, links and docs. Invoices, PDFs and floor plans are much easier to spot here than by scrolling.
Star what will matter later
Long-press a message and tap the ☆ star. All starred messages are listed together in Settings → Starred. Do it for quotes, deposits, addresses and anything you agreed.
💡 Search only covers messages that are still on this phone. If a chat was cleared, the phone was replaced without a backup, or media was deleted to free space, it will not show up.
Keep a copy of important conversations
If a chat might matter later, for a dispute, a hand-over or your tax records, keep a copy outside the phone. You can export the chat by hand (see our guide), or keep a running archive.
WhatSmall keeps a searchable archive of every number you link, even if you later clear a chat from your phone, and searches across all of them at once. How much older history is synced at the start is decided by WhatsApp; everything from the moment you link is kept.
